Dr. Ohira received his MD from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan, where he also received his surgical training. He received a PhD in Medicine from the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan, and he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, with broad exposure to complex cardiac surgical cases and surgical management of heart failure.
Dr. Ohira currently serves as Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Director of Thoracic Aortic Disease Research at Westchester Medical Center.
His clinical interests are surgery for the thoracic aorta (aneurysm and aortic dissection), reoperation, coronary artery bypass grafting including multiple arterial grafting, valve repair and replacement, as well as surgery for heart failure, including cardiac transplantation, left ventricular assist devices, and other mechanical circulatory support devices such as “ECMO.â€
Dr. Ohira has published more than 90 articles in peer reviewed journals on thoracic aorta, aortic dissection and aneurysm, the surgical treatment of heart failure including heart transplantation, ventricular assist device, and ECMO, coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement procedures. As WMC cardiac surgery team, Dr. Ohira and colleagues have reported a variety of surgical strategies and techniques to improve patients' outcome. In research activity, he works closely with medical students, residents and fellows.
