Minimally Invasive Surgery: By Doing Less, We Do More.

Our mission is to do the minimum in order to achieve the maximum results. For our surgeons and patients, the “minimum” often means that we take a minimally invasive approach using microscopic tools, tiny incisions just millimeters in length, and high definition cameras. As a result of these techniques, many of our young patients, even the smallest newborns, are able to bounce back faster with less pain and scarring and quicker recoveries.

WMCHealth Physicians has been a leader in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for years, and continues to make advancements in this field. Through leveraging some of the leading tools and techniques in pediatric surgery, such as the Nuss procedure, we’re often able to help kids get back to being kids quickly and safely.

An Integrated Care Model Built Around the Child and Family

We understand that any reason your child requires surgery can be a source of stress and worry. At WMCHealth Physicians, our pediatric surgeons aim to make this difficult time as easy as possible for your family. We do this by actively ensuring parents and caregivers are kept informed every step of the way. As your child is cared for by pediatric surgery specialists, attending physicians, nurses, and postoperative and rehab specialists, we strive to keep you informed and empowered with quality information. The entire integrated care model is built upon the foundation of Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a recognized leader in advanced pediatric care.

The Nuss Procedure for Pectus Excavatum

WMCHealth Physicians is proud to offer the Nuss procedure for treating pectus excavatum, a condition that causes the chest to cave in, resulting in abnormal development of the ribs and breastbone. In some children, pectus excavatum may cause issues with the function of the heart and lungs.

The Nuss procedure is a minimally invasive surgery done to correct the collapsed chest. During this procedure, the surgeon makes two tiny incisions on the side of the chest. One or more steel bars are inserted behind the breastbone and attached to the ribs. By turning the bars, the surgeon raises the breastbone. The surgeon then fixes the bars in place. The chest reshapes in approximately two to four years, at which point the bars are removed.
