Urogynecology, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery

Urogynecology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of problems that affect the urinary and reproductive systems of nearly 13 million American women—problems such as incontinence (involuntary urine leakage) or other disorders of the pelvic floor.

With high occurrence rates of almost 50 percent in post-menopausal women, incontinence is often portrayed as a problem exclusively for older women, but such problems are also common in twenty-somethings and teens. Due to the sensitive nature of the issue and a lack of information, many women accept this condition as part of life and don’t seek treatment to correct the problem.

Changing Lives for Women of All Ages

How incontinence is treated depends on its type. The specialists at Advanced OB/GYN Associates offer a variety of treatment options for urge incontinence which include:

  • Medications that target the bladder receptors (such as Detrol and Vesicare) or Botox injections which paralyze tissue
  • An implantable sacral neuromodulator device called InterStim, which delivers electrical impulses to the sacral nerve, controlling the bladder and muscles related to urinary function; an InterStim acts as a pacemaker to calm an overactive bladder.

Better Alternatives

Many women unsuccessfully try traditional non-medical methods such as Kegel exercises and biofeedback to address problems with stress incontinence.

They can also perform a minimally invasive procedure called sling surgery. This process is performed vaginally through one small incision under the urethra and two tiny skin incisions at the ”bikini line” or in the groin. A small band of mesh is placed under the urethra to support the urethra and prevent stress-related urine leakage. Sling surgery is relatively pain-free and boasts success rates as high as 90%.
