Westchester Medical Center Health Network Names Roberto Bergamaschi, MD, as Chief of Colorectal Surgery

As Chief of Colorectal Surgery, Dr. Bergamaschi will build a comprehensive colorectal surgery program to treat patients across the Hudson Valley.

Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) welcomes colorectal surgeon Roberto Bergamaschi, MD, PhD, as Chief of Colorectal Surgery for the health network's Valhalla and Poughkeepsie campuses. Dr. Bergamaschi will oversee all colorectal surgery services at WMCHealth's flagship Westchester Medical Center, as well as Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and MidHudson Regional Hospital.

Dr. Bergamaschi brings to the department of surgery a wealth of expertise in colorectal surgery and diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. With a focus on robotic and laparoscopic surgery, he specializes in colorectal disorders including colon, rectal and anal cancer, as well as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), fistulas, Crohn's disease, hereditary colon polyps and incontinence, among other conditions.

As Chief of Colorectal Surgery, Dr. Bergamaschi will build a comprehensive colorectal surgery program to treat patients across the Hudson Valley. Dr. Bergamaschi believes in the importance of teamwork to provide the very best individualized care for patients, and he makes it a priority to provide compassionate care that is respectful of patients' personal and cultural beliefs.

Prior to joining WMCHealth, Dr. Bergamaschi served as Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery, and Professor of Surgery with tenure at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, as well as Director of the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Disease Management Team at Stony Brook Cancer Center.

Board certified in emergency surgery, general surgery, and gastrointestinal surgery, Dr. Bergamaschi earned his medical degree at the University of Milan School of Medicine in Italy and his PhD at the University of Bergen School of Medicine in Norway. He completed surgical residencies internationally at medical centers in France, England and Norway. He has also served as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England, as well as the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Surgical Association in the United States.

Dr. Bergamaschi, who lives in Old Field, NY, is fluent in four foreign languages – Italian, French, German, and Norwegian, in addition to Latin and Ancient Greek. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his two sons and playing the double bass.
