Neurology

The Department of Neurology is comprised of multi-disciplinary teams of clinical experts that provide comprehensive neurological care for a wide range of neurological disorders affecting the brain, spine, nerves, and muscle. Conditions treated include neurologic emergencies, such as acute stroke or status epilepticus, to more chronic conditions such as headache/pain syndromes, epilepsy (seizures), neuromuscular (neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy), neuroimmunological (multiple sclerosis), as well as neurodegenerative (dementia) and movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease). All divisions are directed by highly qualified sub-specialists. Learn more about neurology care available at WMCHealth Physicians.

Neurosurgery

The Westchester Medical Center Health Network provides individuals throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond with access to an extensive array of neurosurgeons and fellowship-trained subspecialists. Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital serve as the primary hubs for several advanced neurosurgery programs, including Spine Surgery; Neuro-oncology (Brain, spine and Spinal Cord Tumors); Skull Base Surgery; Cerebrovascular Services (Stroke, Aneurysms) including Endovascular Surgery; Functional Neurosurgery (Pain, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy); Peripheral Nerve Surgery; Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neurotrauma and Neurosurgical Critical Care. Learn more. Neurosurgical care is extended throughout the network via specialized care at MidHudson Regional Hospital.

The team is comprised of experts from the departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Pain Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Anesthesia, Oncology and Neuroradiology. Learn more.

Neuro-Trauma

Direct trauma to the brain requires careful and dedicated care––often over a lengthy course of rehabilitation. Neuro-trauma patients at Westchester Medical Center are cared for by a dedicated team of rehab specialists in both the inpatient care and emergent settings.

Memory Disorders

Neurologists at Westchester Medical Center, MidHudson Regional Hospital, and WMCHealth Physicians in Poughkeepsie provide care for individuals suffering from memory disorders and related conditions, including dementia, vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and encephalopathy.

Neuromuscular Disorders

Specialists at WMCHealth Physicians provide care for a full range of neuromuscular disorders, which affect the nerves responsible for voluntary muscle movement and the relay of sensory information to the brain. Physicians evaluate and diagnose patients experiencing muscle weakness, muscle loss, movement difficulties, issues with swallowing or breathing, numbness, tingling, pain, and other symptoms. Care is available for individuals diagnosed with a wide range of pathologies, including muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other diagnoses.

Pain Management

The Department of Neurosurgery collaborates closely with the Division of Pain Management, located on the fourth floor of the Ambulatory Care Pavilion at 100 Woods Road. This partnership is a key relationship within our multidisciplinary Spine Center that allows WMCHealth to offer a truly comprehensive approach to improving the mobility and comfort of patients with pain. This includes neck and back pain, spasticity, and cancer related conditions. Pain Management care is also available at Westchester Medical Center and at WMCHealth Physician’s Hawthorne practice location.

Stroke

Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our team of stroke specialists encourages the community to learn more about stroke symptoms and to call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of a possible stroke. Emergency medical services can be directed to take a stroke patient to the closest awarded WMCHealth hospital for expert care, if transport is considered to be safe for the individual.

Acute stroke involves sudden neurological deficit ranging from numbness to weakness to speech impairment. In recent years, high-tech minimally invasive neurovascular surgery has emerged as a treatment for acute stroke. WMCHealth surgeons at Westchester Medical Center’s Brain and Spine Institute can deliver a catheter-based system through the arteries of the brain to remove a blood clot and reduce or eliminate symptoms. Westchester Medical Center provides 24/7 acute stroke care for patients seen in our own emergency department or transferred from other hospitals throughout the Hudson Valley. Acute stroke is considered an emergency. Call 911 at the first sign of symptoms.
